MooLux Save Guide: Creating a Live USB with Permanent Storage (Persistence)

Written by Djair (MooLux Project)

What is Persistence Mode in MooLux 6.0?

In previous MooLux 5.4 releases, this capability was known as MooLux Save. In MooLux 6.0, persistence is handled natively by the Casper overlay system using an ext4 partition labeled writable.

With persistence enabled, you can carry your entire portable workstation in your pocket — complete with documents, Chrome browser profiles, SSH credentials, and custom software packages across different computers.

Flashing the ISO to a USB Drive

Use Rufus on Windows or the dd command on Linux:

bashMooLux Terminal
# Example writing MooLux 6.0 ISO to USB (/dev/sdX) on Linux
sudo dd if=MooLux-006-driver-wifi-resolute-amd64.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=4M status=progress oflag=sync

Creating the Persistence Partition (`writable`)

If you flashed the ISO using dd, you can format the remaining unallocated USB space as an ext4 partition labeled writable:

bashMooLux Terminal
# Create a new partition on remaining USB space and format with 'writable' label
sudo mkfs.ext4 -L writable /dev/sdX3

When the GRUB boot menu appears, choose MooLux Live (Persistent) and your session changes will automatically be retained on the flash drive.
